In short, we are heading for a colossal damage

Syed Mustafa Ahmad

The period of youth falls between the childhood and the adulthood. It is characterized by energy, agility, creativeness, perseverance, emotional building, etc., to name a few. It is this period that can make or mar the life of a youth. This period has a direct bearing on the approaching future. So, it becomes quite clear that how careful a youth has to be during this stage.

Leniency can prove fatal. But this urgency has been lost somewhere in the dreary desert of wilderness. The youth of today are not in a position to know their worth. Their attitude is very complacent. They take things for granted. Their energies don’t enable them to pause for a moment and ponder over the reality of life. It is not in their curriculum. This situation of theirs is not the result of a single day. It is a decay of many centuries. The legacy followed by them is full of limitations. They have little to look at to be optimistic due to many reasons. I will try my best to make some points clear.

It is a well-known fact that education is the only weapon to achieve the greatest feats of civilization. Without education, no development is possible. But in this part of the land, particularly, in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, education has almost lost its value.

Education is not compatible with the environment. There is a wide chasm between what is taught and the realities on the ground. It creates a situation where a youth gets frustrated. Hence, disobedience becomes the order of the day.

Corruption has to be abhorred. But a youth is forced to choose corruption over morality to get a decent job, seat in a university, papers signed, etc. In this situation, the whole process of learning loses its value. How can the producers of learning act as criminals? How can be a meritorious student thrown out of the university if he or she doesn’t have money for the illegal works? The political crisis since 1990 has been acting as the last nail in the coffin. Shutdowns are the order of the day.

Many schools, colleges, universities, Islamic Institutions, etc were burnt. A lot of students are dead. Some have disappeared. Some are disabled. Many teachers are killed on the political ideas. It has haunted us more than before. Everyday violence means that no one is secure.

When laws are trampled upon in a broad daylight, there remains nothing to say and observe. Why do we need laws? Laws are for the sake of the welfare state. Buy when it comes to reality, the said laws are kept on the back burner and it paves the way for the youth to become rebels. They can’t understand the binary of things. The paradoxes of life force them to become something different and find themselves incompatible with the society.

Another cause is economic in nature. Economic independence means that a youth is free to fulfill his wishes. He can think of new startups, if he is economically independent. But we don’t have such mechanism. The youth of today are not economically independent. Moreover, their innovative thoughts have no audience. Their creative thoughts in the economic sphere don’t find any destination and they become frustrated. They call themselves useless and find life as a source of frustration.

The third cause is the social setup of the society. We hate moral things and love immoral things. The things that are worthy of discussion, are never discussed and the things that are unworthy of discussion, are discussed in the nook and corner of any area. Superstitions rule here and there. Scientific temperament is lacking. People believe in myths.

Rumours rule the roost. Foul language is not an evil at all. Futile rituals find space here. People kill each other for useless traditions. Religion has become the handiwork of a devil. In the name of peace, wars are fought. Suspicion is present everywhere. Backbiting is common. In this atmosphere, when the straight becomes crooked, there is enough room for frustration. How can the sacred laws be used for petty gains? It is this condition that mars the future of any society. There are many reasons more to discuss. But I stop here.

In short, we are heading for a colossal damage. The need of the hour is to save our youth from destruction. The ball is in our court. Are we ready?
