The day Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, people in Kashmir were a terrified lot. The reason for being so was that Kashmir is one of the most underdeveloped places in the world when it comes to healthcare facilities.

Official figures and hyperboles aside, the authorities in Kashmir has always been indifferent towards developing or improving the healthcare facilities. This includes physical infrastructure as well as enhancement of trained manpower. Our assertion that healthcare setup is far from being even meeting the satisfactory norms here is proved while we are fighting the deadly coronavirus.

Several failures have surfaced that have not only raised eyebrows on the way healthcare system is functioning but has also put a serious question mark as to how it is functioning.

Let us quote some recent examples when a senior Journalist was declared as Covid-19 positive at a government run health facility and the same person was declared as Covid-19 negative by another hospital, again a government run healthcare facility.

This grave error has pointed out that such glaring error can put lives at stake. If the result is shown positive, while the person is healthy it has a dreadful impact on the person as well his immediate family and friends who have come in contact with him. Besides, the person himself faces lot of mental trauma owing to the fact the viral infection has been taken and treated in our society.

Interestingly, if the same covid test is declared as negative and the person is positive for the infection what impact will it have as the person will unmindfully infect others without even knowing that he is acting as a main source of infection?

In both the cases we can say that the authorities here need to gear up and ensure that all the tests are carried out in a professional way so that no scope is left for any such error that can have far reaching consequences for the society as a whole.

The second and most important fact that has remained a mystery since the covid-19 pandemic has made its presence felt in Kashmir is that many such fatality cases have been closed under the garb of coronavirus infections. We can take several cases including the one in Sopore, another one from Miskeen Bagh Khanyar and the third one from Pampore.

These three fatalities were reported on Monday, but what is interesting to note is that the patients were admitted in hospitals for past many weeks and were all accident victims who were being treated in the hospitals.

If these patients fell to the coronavirus infection, should be conclude that the hospitals in Kashmir are not safe enough as they had contracted the viral disease during treatment. If the answer to this question is no, then let the authorities explain to the people as how did these causalities fall within the parameters of covid-19 infections.

The health authorities have a lot of explaining to do on several counts and one such being lack of transparency on covid-19 management in government hospitals.
