The fight against Coronavirus is taking us nowhere. The failure to flatten the ever expanding curve, both in terms of fatalities and positive cases has pointed out that there are grave irregularities being followed in the procedures that are to be implemented to bring in some change at the ground level.

As on Friday Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing an increase in the number of positive cases and the figure it seems is growing at an alarming rate. During this week we were told that the number of positive cases has surged due to the increased arrivals (both domestic and international) in Jammu and Kashmir.

We were made to believe that the phenomenon will subside once the arrivals show a dip and things will be in control. However, the statistics that are made available after every 24 hours make us realize that the assertion on arrivals and increased number of Covid-19 positive cases have proven wrong.

The surge in the number of cases across India too is a pointer towards the hard failures that seem to have surfaced while dealing with the pandemic situation. If we take into account the national figures, they too seem to be painting a very horrendous picture.

On Friday India saw a record single-day jump of 9,851 coronavirus cases and 273 deaths, pushing the nationwide infection tally to 2,26,770 and the death toll to 6,348. These increased figures have put the country at seventh among the nation’s worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic after US, Brazil, Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy.

Even today the number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 1,10,960 and the concerns to deal with the deadly virus seem to be growing with every passing day. The authorities both at the state as well as the federal level need to have a rethink and restrategize the efforts that they are putting in to deal with coronavirus.

One thing is quite clear that the infections contracted by the virus are still untreatable as no antivirals or any other drug, be it in solo form or combinations, is working against the virus. Besides, the world seems too far away from breaking ground and announcing a vaccine to control the virus spread.

That puts us on a sticky wicket as announcing lockdowns for too longer periods have been rather more detrimental than helping the case in any way. Therefore, the best possible solution is to work out a plan that will ensure that people live with the situation and do not end up turning paupers owing to the extended lockdowns and closure of all activities.

Fighting the pendamic demands a logical thinking, one that will help the people-rather than create problems for them. For this the administration should work out an out of the box solutions like categorizing business activities and depending on their importance and utility allow them functioning in rotation.

Besides, the measures that will keep the virus away from us need to be implemented. The police and the administration should be more proactive in ensuring social distancing, avoiding crowd and alerting the people to maintain distances and learn new methods while working or carrying out any other activity.
