Kulgam: Police Saturday arrested a woman for extorting money from a man in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Police said that a woman identified as Mehbooba Banu wife of Shafqat Kuchay of Kadder village was arrested in connection with a complaint that she had extorted money from a person on the pretext of getting him released from police.
A police official said that one Nazir Ahmed of Tungdunoo had been called by police for questioning in connection with a militancy related input. However, after questioning he was allowed to go to his home.
However, Mehbooba Banu along with her family members approached Nazir and her family claiming that police will detain him again and that they should pay her Rs one lakh so that he could be saved from further questioning.
Sources said that the poor family collected 80,000 rupees and gave the amount to her. However, after few days the Nazir’s family felt that they have been cheated and demanded their money back.
Apprehending that the family of Nazir may approach police with a complaint, the woman sent two of her relatives to Nazir and his family during the night wearing masks who threatened them not to approach the police.
However, Nazir’s family approached the police and on receipt of a complaint, a case with FIR number 68/2020 U/S 420, 451, 500, 506, 109, 34 IPC was registered against the accused and the woman who grabbed the money was arrested. (KNT)
