1547 ceasefire violations recorded in JK during this year
Srinagar: The first four-and-a half months of year 2020 have witnessed a huge spike in the ceasefire violations on the Line on Control (LoC) in JK as 1547 CFVs have been recorded so far alone, official figures reveal.
The highest number of CFVs took place in the month of March at 411. Figures available state that in 1629 CFVs were reported in J&K in 2018 and 3168 in 2019, the highest since 2015.
“In January this year, 367 CFVs took place, 366 were reported in February. March recorded highest number of CVFs at 411 and in April, ceasefire was violated 387 times. In the month of May, 16 ceasefire violations were reported up to May 3 and in total in the first four-and-a half months, 1547 incidents of CFVs were reported alone, which is highest as well,” the figures suggest.
An official in the security grid said that the CFV are expected to increase in the months of June, July, August, September and October as these are the peak infiltration period in J&K.
“In the month of June and July, snow starts melting at the passes which is an indication that infiltration may go up. We expect rise in infiltration attempts as this year so far a major infiltration bid was foiled in April alone in which five militants were killed in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district,” the official said.
In the encounter, five soldiers of Special Forces squad including a JCO were also killed in a “face to face” fight with the infiltrating militants. Defence sources said the bodies of slain soldiers and militants were found very close to each other in Keran sector which indicates that “it was a hand-to-hand fight.”
The deadly ceasefire violations claimed three lives in Kupwara sector including an eight-year-old boy of Chowkibal. In the exchange of mortars between the armies of two sides, shells fired from across landed directly on the residential house killing a minor boy, a woman and a youth, besides damaged livestock and at least six residential houses.
Another security official said that though the terrain and topography on the LoC in Kashmir is difficult, but troops are maintaining highest level of vigil to thwart all the possible infiltration bids being made from across.
“Heightened vigil is being maintained at the traditional infiltration routes in north Kashmir’s Gurez, Keran, Uri, Machil and Tandghar sectors,” he added. (KNO)
