Militants escape cordon in Kulgam
Kulgam: An encounter between security forces and militants, which broke out at Yamrach village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday night, ended on Thursday with the militants managing to flee from the encounter site taking advantage of the darkness.
An official said that the encounter started after a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir police, Army’s 34 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Yamrach in Yaripora belt of the district after receiving a specific input about the presence of some militants in the area.
“As the security forces approached towards the suspected spot, militants opened fire upon them, which was retaliated triggering an encounter,” the official added.
“The militants fired indiscriminately on combined forces after contact was established. There was an exchange of fire between militants and soldiers for some time, after which militants took advantage of darkness and escaped from the village,” official said, adding that search operation was extended to nearby villages to nab the militants.
He added that an FIR has been registered at Police Staion Yaripora in this regard and further investigation is going on.
Official sources said that two structures also suffered damage during the operation.
