Death toll touches 10, 18 more test positive for the deadly infection

Srinagar: A middle-aged man from Alamrgari Bazar Srinagar became the fresh victim of the covid-19 in Kashmir Valley on Monday, four days after his young son died of the dreaded disease. His death has taken the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir to ten. Meanwhile, 18 more people tested positive for the virus taking the positive cases toll to 879 in the Union Territory.
Official sources that the man, with underlying serious comorbidities like coronavirus, died at the CD hospital where he was shifted soon after his test report came out to be positive for the novel coronavirus on May 8.
“He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and had other comorbidities. He died at the hospital this afternoon,” Dr Salim Tak, Medical Superintendent CD Hospital Srinagar said.
With this fatality, 10 persons have died due to the disease so far in Jammu and Kashmir, 9 of them in Kashmir and one in Jammu division.
The man’s death has also taken Srinagar’s toll to 4, highest in any district followed by Baramulla with 3 deaths, one each in Bandipora , Annatnag and Udhampur. The 32- year-old son of the deceased had died on May 7 and he had contracted the disease while attending to his father admitted in Oncology department at Super Speciality Hospital Shireen Bagh.
Meanwhile, eighteen more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the number of Covid-19 patients in J&K to 879 and over 800 in Valley.
Official told that among them 11 were reported from Kulgam, three each from Jammu and Kathua and one from Baramulla.
With these cases, the total number of cases in Jammu and Kashmir have gone upto 802 in Kashmir and 77 in Jammu division. Among them 427 people have recovered while ten others have dies, leaving the number of positive cases in J&K to 442—21 in Jammu and 421 in Kashmir.
With these cases, Srinagar has 136 cases (56 active) followed by Bandipora with 134 (56 active), Anantnag 123 (110 active), Baramulla 109 (61 active), Shopian 103 (52 active), Kupwara 73 (30 active), Budgam 46 (32 active), 42 Kulgam (36 active), Ganderbal 23 (9 active) and Pulwama 13 (4 active).
Similarly, Jammu has 35 positive cases and all but 9 of them have recovered followed by Udhampur 22 (2 Active), Samba 7 (3 active), Kathua 6 (5 active), Rajouri 4 (zero active) while Kishtwar (zero active), Ramban and Reasi districts have one case each.
The government also informed that 44 patients have recovered, taking the number of such people 427. 32 of those who recovered today include 32 from Bandipora, nine from Anantnag, one each from Kupwara, Budgam and Kulgam
Government said that till date 94419 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 22708 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 190 in Hospital Quarantine, 442 in hospital isolation and 10188 under home surveillance. Besides, 61881 persons have completed their surveillance period.
Meanwhile the government appealed public that Stigma around COVID-19 can discourage people to take necessary steps to fight the virus. “Encourage patients to come forward for COVID-19 testing if they develop symptoms, as early detection of COVID-19 can prevent the spread of disease. Not disclosing symptoms like fever, cough and difficulty in breathing could put life of individuals and their families at risk,” it said, adding, “In case of symptoms report early and do not fear, call COVID-19 helpline numbers and seek medical advice.” (with inputs from GNS)
