Police officer suffers head injury during stone pelting

Srinagar: A police officer was injured on Friday during clashes with miscreants, protesting the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Riyaz Naikoo, in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Fayaz Hussain sustained head injury during stone pelting by miscreants at Nasrullahpora locality in Budgam district, the officials said.
The miscreants pelted stones to protest the killing of Naikoo and his associate during an encounter with security forces in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district on Wednesday.
Police sources said that a police party led by DSP Headquarters was on a routine patrol in different parts of Budgam when it came under attack in Nasrullah Pora village.
Sources added that unknown youth pelted stones on the police party resulting in the injuries of the officer. He was shifted to nearest hospital for treatment.
Sources said that police fired some tear-smoke shells to disperse the youth.
Pertinently, after the killing of Hizb Commander Reyaz Naikoo, authorities as a precautionary measure suspended mobile internet services and calling facility. Clashes erupted at many places against the killing of Naikoo.
Later police used batons and tear smoke shells to chase away the protesters, the officials said, adding there were no reports of any injuries among the protesters so far.
A police official confirmed that a cop received injuries in a stone-pelting incident in Budgam village. He added that those responsible for the act will be booked under law. (with inputs from PTI, KNT)
