COVID-19 claims 32 year old man in Kashmir, death toll reaches 9
Medical officer among 18 test positive, tally rises to 793
Srinagar: A 32- year old man from Alamgiri Bazaar area of Srinagar died at SMHS hospital here, becoming the youngest victim of the dreaded disease.
Meanwhile, a medical officer at Super Specialty Hospital at Shreenbagh Srinagar and a 9-year-old girl were among 18 persons who tested positive for novel coronavirus even as Jammu and Kashmir broke 3000 per day test barrier.
With this fatality, 9 persons have died due to the disease so far in Jammu and Kashmir, 8 of them in Kashmir and one in Jammu division.
The man’s death has also taken Srinagar’s toll to 3, equal to Baramulla and highest so far in any other districts in J&K.
Confirming the 32- year-old’s death, Nodal officer GMC Dr. Saleem Khan said that he was attending to his father admitted in Oncology department at Super Speciality Hospital Shireen Bagh.
Medical superintendent Dr. Nazir Choudhary said that the man was admitted to hospital on May 05 with underlying ailment pneumonia.
“He died late last night and samples came out to be positive at around 9:00 Pm on Wednesday,” he said, adding, “the body has been handed over to the family for last rites to be carried out as per the COVID-19 protocol”.
Official sources said that the man had no travel history to any affected place outside Jammu and Kashmir.
However, they said he was attending to his father who was admitted at Cancer ward of Super Speciality Hospital Shireen Bagh where a 55 year-old woman, a plastic surgery patient, from Sangam Anantnag tested positive along with 19 year-old teenager (Attendant) from Surankote Poonch tested positive for the pathogen earlier.
Doctors said that the young man was suffering from low blood pressure besides he was also diabetic.
Meanwhile, a doctor at Super Specialty Hospital here said that the worst fears are starting to come true.
With the fresh cases—Four from Shopian, 3 from Pulwama, two each from Srinagar, Bandipora and Jammu and one each in Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam and Ganderbal—the number of Covid-19 cases has gone upto 793—449 among them being active positive as 335 have recovered and nine others have died.
“J&K breaks the 3000 tests a day barrier- 3429 samples tested; 18 positives detected. Total positives now 793- Jammu 68; Kashmir 725. Our positivity rate 2.1%; Mortality rate 1.13%,” Rohit Kansal, Pricipal Secretary Information and government spokesman said.
The casualty medical officer sources said is a 35-year-old doctor and is resident of Srinagar.
Dr Shabir Dar, medical Superintendent Super Specaility hospital said the casualty medical officer’s sample came out positive.
A doctor said that the “emerging trend” was becoming dangerous as besides the doctor, three others have tested positive out of the 250 samples sent from the hospital so far. The other case from Srinagar is a 32-year-old man who died at SMHS hospital yesterday.
Professor Farooq Jan, medical Superintendent SKIMS told GNS that six samples returned positive for the novel coronavirus and included four from Shopian— 9-year-old girl, 34-year-old woman and a 34-year-old male from Manzimpora area besides a 20-year-old youth from west Bengal. The two other cases include 70-year-old woman from Neibugh Pulwama and 55-year-old woman from Bateengo Anantnag.
The other cases from Pulwama include 75-year-old man from Awantipora and 47-yea-old from Pampore while Budgam case is a female, a resident of Gundsoo Budgam and the Baramulla district’s cases include a male from Balhama.
Bandipora cases include 45-year-old woman from Hajan and 58-year-old man from Gamroo while Ganderbal’s case includes 60-year-old man from Safapora area.
Providing district-wise breakup, government said that Bandipora with two new positive cases has taken the total to 134 positive cases with 70 Active Positive, 63 recovered (including 01 recovery today), 01 death; Srinagar has 126 (including 02 today) positive cases with 47 Active Positive, 76 recovered, 03 deaths; Anantnag district reported 1 new cases which led to 122 positive cases with 120 Active Positive, 01 recovered, 01 death; Baramulla has 105 positive cases (including 01 reported today) with 60 Active Positive, 42 recovered, 03 deaths; with 04 fresh cases today, Shopian has 98 positive cases with 64 Active Positive, 34 recovered (including 09 recoveries today); Kupwara has 69 positive cases with 38 Active Positive, 31 recovered; Budgam with 01 new case has 31 positive cases with 19 Active Positive and 12 recovered cases; Ganderbal has 16 positive cases including 1 case reported today with 02 Active case and 14 recoveries; Kulgam has 12 positive cases with 07 Active Positive and 05 recoveries including 02 recoveries today; Pulwama reported 12 positive cases (including 03 cases reported today) with 08 active positive, 04 recovered (including 01 recovery today).
Similarly, Jammu has 31 positive cases (including 02 cases reported today—61-year-old man, his 23-year-old) with 05 active positive cases and 26 recoveries; Udhampur has 22 positive cases (including 01 case reported today—27-year-old driver ) with 02 active positive case, 19 recovered and 01 death; Samba has 07 positive cases with 03 Active Positive and 04 recoveries; Rajouri has 04 positive cases, 01 active positive and 03 have recovered; Kathua has 01 positive case who is active positive; Kishtwar had only 01 positive case who has recovered while Ramban and Reasi districts have 01 active positive case each . According to media Bulletin issued here by government, out of 37706 test results available, 36913 samples have tested as negative till May 07.
Furthermore, till date 84900 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 16387 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 186 in Hospital Quarantine, 449 in hospital isolation and 8121 under home surveillance.
Besides, 59748 persons have completed their surveillance period. (with GNS inputs)
