Handwara gunfight rages on, CRPF man injured in grenade blast
Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter at Dangerpora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday. Meanwhile, a gunfight is going on at Handwara in north Kashmir where two militants are believed to be holed up in a house.
A senior police officer said that the bodies of the militants were recovered from under the debris of the houses during the search operation.
Besides the bodies, some arms and ammunition and other incriminating material have been recovered, he said.
“In this connection, a case under relevant sections of law was registered and further investigations were taken up,” he said.
He said that the identity and the group affiliation of the slain duo are being ascertained.
The officer said that the gunfight broke out soon after a joint team of army’s 55 RR, SOG and CRPF 182 bn, 183 bn launched a cordon-and-search operation in the village on Saturday during the wee hours following inputs about the presence of the militants.
Meanwhile, reports said that several persons received minor injuries during clashes near the encounter site. A police constable also suffered injuries during the stone-pelting clashes in the area.
Following the gunfight, the authorities have suspended the only 2G internet service in the southern district.
Meanwhile, a gunfight broke out between forces and militants in Chanjmullah village of Handwara area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Officials said that after several hours of siege in the area, contact with militants has been established. The official said that the exchange of fire is going on at the gunfight site.
Meanwhile police on its official twitter handle also informed that a gunfight broke out in the village. “Encounter has started at #Chanjmullah area of Handwara. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police tweeted.
Elsewhere, a paramilitary CRPF trooper was injured after militants on Saturday evening lobbed a grenade on government forces deployment in Tahab area of Pulwama district.
Reports said that the suspected militants hurled a grenade on the joint team of police and CRPF deployed at Tahab Chowk. However, the device missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside.
“The security personnel fired some aerial gunshots,” they said.
PRO CRPF Pankaj Singh said that the trooper namely Constable Sumanpradhan sustained minor splinter injuries and has been given first aid.
A police officer also confirmed the attack and said that a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers. (with inputs from GNS)
