Authorities fear ‘community spread’ in Shopian village

Shopian: Hirpora village which is known for its scenic beauty and tasty potatoes is turning out to be a hotspot of Coronavirus with 44 cases including two recoveries being recorded here.
Officials said that infection has entered into community transmission phase in the area and to deal with the situation rapid testing process has been started in the area.
The first case with a travel history of Maharashtra was detected in first week of April and after that three more persons from the village who had travel history to outside states also tested positive.
After four persons tested positive in the hamlet, authorities started contact tracing and all suspects were put under quarantine including the persons who had contacted with positive persons in the local mosque.
Officials said that among their contacts eight persons tested positive after which contact tracing was intensified.
“During the last two days 24 persons from the area have tested positive,” they said.
They added that mass screening in the village had already begun three days back but going by the gravity of the situation now, we are going for mass testing now.
“We are observing all the protocols and have already put hundreds of suspected cases in quarantine,” they said, adding, that every possible step is being taken to stop more spread of covid-19.
Pertinently, Shopian has a total of 44 positive cases of covid-19, among them two have recovered and were discharged a week before.
The continuous surge of positive cases in Hirpora village has left the residents worried.
The village has been completely sealed as fear stricken villagers remain unsure what lies in store for them, said a local.
He said no one is stepping out of their houses not even daring to attend to their orchards or potato farms.
