Sonamarg, Apr 11: Leh Highway, an important strategic road that connects Ladakh region with the rest of the world was thrown open by Border Roads Organisation on Saturday.

The road has been opened ahead of schedule date in order to ensure supply of essential commodities to Ladakh region, a BRO official said.

He said that the 425 km road also called NH1 connecting Ladakh with rest of the Country   was closed in December last year due to incessant snow at Zojila pass.

The official said that as per the directions from Divisional Commissioner Ladakh there was an emergent need to ensure supply of essential commodities in the Ladakh UT.

“Keeping that in mind a team of project Beacon cleared the fresh snow at the Zojilla  at 11500 ft and  made the road motorable.

The BRO official said that about 18 oil tankers and other trucks carrying other essential commodities have been allowed to move towards Leh / Ladakh  from Zojilla pass.

This year the region witnessed a heavy snowfall but the road opening was taken up as a challenge by the BRO and the task was completed in a record time, he added.
