Shopian: With the rising cases of COVID-19 reported in Jammu and Kashmir and an increased demand for face masks, a PhD scholar from south Kashmir’s Shopian district is sewing masks to contribute his bit to secure people’s lives.

“On the one hand government is educating people about this deadly virus and asking them to take precautionary measures so as to stop the spread of COVID-19, but on the other there is shortage of protection gears including masks,” said Bilal Ahmad.

Bilal is a young scholar hailing from Manihal Chotipora village of Shopian district. He is presently pursuing his Doctorate in Physical Education and has decided to make masks and distribute them among the needy in his area.

“I started making masks at home since the past one week and whatever masks I have managed to make on my own have been distributed to those who were in need of it and could not afford to buy one,” says Bilal.

“When the idea struck me to manufacture masks locally, I purchased the required material and started the activity on my own. During the first few days I faced many difficulties I wasn’t aware about how to run a sewing machine,” says Bilal.

“Despite these difficulties I kept on trying and somehow I learned to run the machine and since then I have been continuously working to make more and more masks,” he said.

“I could see the fear among the people owing to the coronavirus. However, as the people in my village are very poor they could not afford to buy masks. I decided to volunteer and started making masks for them,” he said.

“By resorting to this humble contribution I am also fighting coronavirus and helping people to stay healthy,” he added.

“So far he (Bilal) has made hundreds of masks which he has distributed among the people living in his area and this move has attracted applauds for him,” said his friend.
