Kulgam: District Library located in the heart of Kulgam town lacks all basic facilities and authorities have failed to provide facilities for the readers.
Readers and visitors to this library complained that the library lacks latest books on varied subjects. Besides, no proper reading room has been made available for those who wish to get the benefit from the treasure trove.
Readers said that the library has a single staff member and whenever he is on leave, the library remains shut.
They said that library also lacks material that could prove fruitful for competitive exams like Union Public Service Commission examinations.
An official in the district administration said that there are over 18000 books available in the library but they haven’t been displayed properly due to lack of lockers besides having dearth of staff as a single staff member has to run the show.
“I have been working here all alone from the last six years and am facing lot of problems,” the lone staffer posted at the library said.
“Though the library is hard to handle by a single person but I despite having some critical other engagements prefer to stay here and keep the library running,” he said.
Meanwhile, Additional District Development Commissioner, Kulgam, Shabir Ahmad, when contacted said that he will look into the issue.
“I will contact the concerned department and see to it that some other staffers are posted here so that the people especially the younger lot get to read the books available here,” he added.
