Locals stage protest demand rehabilitation

Anantnag: Residents of Check Ranbir pora village in Damhal Hanjipora belt in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday staged protest against district administration for falling to rehabilitate the locals as landslides continue in the area thereby damaging their residential houses.
Locals said that landslides continue in the area from last 15 days but authorities have failed to take any step for the rehabilitation of the affected population.
They said that at least 35 families have been dispossessed by the freak natural calamity that hit this hilly area, forcing the residents to live in temporary shelters.
Gulzar Ahmad a local resident said every year landslides hits this hilly area and this year it has damaged many houses that too severely.
“So far three cowsheds, two kitchens have been completely buried with landslides and over 30 houses have developed cracks and can collapse any time,” he said.
Locals on Saturday staged protest in Damhal Hanjipora and demanded rehabilitation so that locals will not face such damages every year.
They also demanded compensation so that they can make some temporary arrangements till authorities rehabilitate them elsewhere.
DDC kulgam Showkat Aijaz , when contacted said that he has visited the area.
“The officials are working on it and documents are being prepared for providing compensation to the affected persons. The process will take some time,” he said.
“We are for providing relief to the local affected households and we will take every possible step for their rehabilitation,” he added.
