Another wet spell predicted in Kashmir

Srinagar: Ahead of another spell of light to moderate snow under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) predicted from Wednesday, the temperature during the day settled above normal as bright sunshine greeted people on Tuesday in Kashmir valley.
However, the night temperature remained below normal due to clear skies at most places in the valley, where isolated heavy rain and snow with gusty winds (30-40 km/hr) would occur for two days from Wednesday.
A Met department spokesperson said that a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, would hit J&K on Wednesday.
“Under the influence of this WD, isolated heavy rain and snow with gusty winds (30-40 km/hr) would occur for two days from Wednesday,” he said, adding the weather will remain wet on Friday as well.
He said the weather is expected to improve from Saturday onwards.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where first Khelo India Winter games is underway, was the coldest place in the valley as the mercury settled at minus 5.6 degree, which is 2 degree below normal.
However, the mercury during the day improved much to the delight of tourists and players, who were participating in different winter games in Gulmarg, which is known for its ski slopes and quality of snow. The maximum temperature in the ski resort settled about 3 degree above normal.
After witnessing below normal night temperature, people in the summer capital, Srinagar, woke up to a chilly Tuesday morning. However, as the day progressed sun came out from behind the cloudy, resulting in improvement in the maximum temperature, which settled over 2 degree above normal.
The spokesperson said that skies would be generally cloudy to light rain and thundershowers in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 12 degree and 4 degree, respectively.
The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, settled at minus 1.8 degree, which is over 3 degree below normal.
The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag settled at 4.6 degree, 0.5 degree and 3.6 degree, respectively. But, the day temperatures in these places also settled above normal.
