Two militants killed in Awantipora gunfight: Police

Srinagar: Two militants were reportedly killed in an encounter that broke out between government forces and militants in Awantipora tehsil of Pulwama district, police said on Tuesday.

“After receiving a tip-off about the presence of 2-3 militants who were wanted by law, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in Khrew area which lies under Police District Awantipora. Searches were conducted to nab the hiding militants in the wee hours of Tuesday morning”, police said.

It also said, “During the search operation, a contact was established with the militants who were taken refugee into a residential house”.

Police spokesman said the hiding militants were offered to surrender which they refused. Afterwards Army, SOG and CRPF tightened the cordon around the house and retaliated to the designs of militants during which 2 unidentified militants were killed.

He said the bodies of slain militants have been recovered from the gunfight site along with incriminating material and other arms and ammunition.

“The identification of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained”, police spokesman said.

He also said that during the firefight two police personnel also received bullet injuries who have been evacuated from the encounter site and shifted to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile the adjoining areas of Khrew locality witnessed complete shutdown as shops and other business establishments closed their ventures soon news about killing of two militants spread. At the occasion traffic movement was also disrupted in the area. (JKNS)
