Srinagar: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has turned Srinagar city into a concrete jungle. Influential persons in connivance with SMC officials have managed to raise massive structures that too during the past three months when the government machinery has shifted its focus elsewhere.
Sources said that over 200 illegal constructions have come up across Kashmir for last two months as during the period of unrest the illegal constrictions have been going on unabated in Srinagar.
“Most of the structures have been raised in Srinagar,” sources said.
Sources said illegal constructions are also being raised in the prohibited area like Kursoo Rajbagh, Saidakadal, Hokersar, Babademb and Dal areas.
A senior SMC confirmed that authorities have come to know that in Jawahar Nagar, Pandach, Batamaloo, Soura, and Shaltang areas illegal constructions have been raised during the last two months.
Sources alleged that no action has been taken against any official responsible for the mess so for.
“SMC issues only statements but does nothing against the offenders. The irony is that most of the officials associated with enforcement squad are part and parcel of this mess,” they added.
“If you visit any SMC Ward in Srinagar, you will find massive structures coming up. It has become a norm for offenders to cover the area with green fabric and carry on the illegal work without any interruption,” said an employee.
“First these officials permit offenders to raise illegal structures and then issue statements about demolition drive, thus befooling people. Corruption has crept deep into our veins and it is degrading the society thick and fast,” said an elderly man.
“We will continue the drive and remove all the illegal constructions which have been raised for last three months,” said an official. (KNT)
