DDC stresses on mass awareness about water conservation

BUDGAM: The District Development Commissioner (DDC), Budgam, Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar Monday launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan under Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, from Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall Budgam in a function organized by Department of Hydraulics Budgam.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a water conservation campaign launched in 275 districts across the country under the first phase. The motive and the message of the Abhiyan is water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation.
The launching of the Abhiyan was attended by SDM Chadoora, Aziz Ahmad, SE Hydraulics, GA Beigh, ACD, Nuzhat Khursheed Qureshi, DHO Budgam, Dr. AG Raina, Exen. Irrigation Budgam, Ex. En. PHE Chadoora, BDOs and other concerned. A large number of Asha, Anganwadi workers, PHE Officers, officials, school children, senior citizens and the general public were also present in the seminar.
Speaking on the occasion the DDC said, this is a revolutionary mission and movement without sincere support and cooperation from the general public, the targets set under this Abhiyan will not be achieved. She said for the conservation of drinking water, apart from the general public all other stakeholders, including NGOs, industries, college and school going students and other volunteers have to play their role efficiently. She said that schemes available under foresting and MGNREGA can help in taking water storage conservation and harvesting of rainwater by contracting structures particularly in rural areas. She said it is imperative to avoid indiscriminative use of tank beds as dumping yards, besides making people aware to refrain from activities like deforestation, denudation and encroachment in the catchment area, including tank beds.
The DDC hailed the efforts of Hydraulic Division Budgam in organizing the awareness programme. She said such campaign in future will demonstrate enormous results if taken with strong commitment and zest.
SDM Chadoora, ACD Budgam and DHO Budgam also spoke on the occasion.
At the end, a booklet on Jal Shakti Abhiyan underwater conservation campaign was also released, besides a documentary film on water conservation and rainwater harvesting was also played.
During the daylong programme, a cultural programme on the theme of Jal Shakti Abhiyan was also presented by renowned artists.
