Pulwama: Constituting a population of over three thousand souls, the scores of Kandi villages in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district are craving for basic amenities of life.
Residents of Kanigam kandi, Charipora, Kadipora, Gujjar Basti and its adjacent areas told Kashmir Vision that they had been deprived of drinking water besides a proper road connectivity.
The residents also rued pesky power cuts in the area.
The local authorities, they alleged, “have failed us on every front as it is because of their step motherly approach towards the area that we are yet to see any development in our area”.
“At a time when the world is progressing at a rapid pace, this area has been deprived of basic necessities despite,” they said.
Locals said that the authorities of the neighboring Pulwama and Budgam districts were passing the buck to each other whenever they approached them with complaints over a regular water supply.
“We don’t understand what to do now,” Saqib Ahmad, a resident of Kanigam area said.
He also rued the dilapidated condition of the road connecting them with rest of the district.
“We are forced to go by foot for many kilometers to reach nearby Pakherpora or Drabgam from where the public transport is available as there is no transport facility available from our area,” another local complained.
During the ongoing peak summer season, the villagers receive power for only a few hours a day, they said.
“The receiving station is 20 kms far from the area due to which the voltage is so low that we are forced to used traditional lighting systems including lanterns and firewood to carry out household work,” he said.
The villagers have been running from pillar to post for past several years with the complaints, “but to no avail,” Adil Ahmad another local, rued.
Said the successive governments had failed to address their issues for the past thirty years, the villagers also blamed the “inefficiency” of local authorities.
Locals appealed the concerned authorities to look into the issues for an immediate redressal.
