India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads for too long now. The hostility between the two nations is telling upon the people of both the nations and people of Kashmir have been the worse hit.
With many peace overtures failing to take off on both the sides now it is the Pakistan premier’s US visit that can act as a buffer for creating an environment of peace and brotherhood among the two warring nations.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s first meeting with US President Donald Trump on July 22 this month is being seen an an initiative that will help reinvigorate the bilateral ties not only among Pakistan and US but also between India and Pakistan as well.
The Pak premier’s visit and subsequent meeting with UD President Donald Trump would be the first summit-level engagement between Pakistan and the United States since both leaders assumed their respective offices.
The visit for surely will focus on a wide-ranging interactions at the White House on July 22 covering bilateral and regional matters. US President Trump’s willingness to host Imran suggests that the two sides might have made forward movement on certain thorny issues, particularly on Afghanistan and Pakistan’s relations with India.
President Trump has been critical of Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism, especially Islamabad’s role in war-ravaged Afghanistan and its role in Kashmir. The issues were taken so seriously by the Trump administration that it suspended security and other assistance to Pakistan, saying Islamabad has given only lies and deceit to the US in return.
For Prime Minister Imran Khan, the stakes are too high vis-à-vis the visit and the meeting with US President. Khan would share his perspective on the Afghan endgame as well as how to build trust between the Pakistan and the United States and develop peaceful environs with its neighbours like India.
Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability and the importance of constructive engagement to promote a political solution in Afghanistan and dialogue with India can greatly be dependent on how well the Trump administrations takes Khan’s assertions and commitments. .
The US has been promoting a policy of peaceful neighbourhood in South Asia aimed at resolving disputes through dialogue and promoting the vision of peace, progress and prosperity.
Though no formal proposal on peace talks between India and Pakistan will be discussed but US can play a role through back channels also to get the two nations to initiate negotiations on various contentious issues that have been plaguing the relationship among the two neighbours.
Though some movement forward has already been achieved as both the countries are re-starting talks on the Kartarpur corridor by the end of this week, the crucial point on staring talks on Kashmir is yet to be arrived at.
However, given the way the US is playing its interests in the south Asian region, the Pak premiers visit will set some agenda for talks between India and Pakistan on all outstanding issues.
