Highway restrictions: Sopore traders stage protest

Sopore, July 12: Hundreds of members of coordination committee Sopore on Friday morning joined a protest along with members of fruit traders at Asia’s second largest Fruit Mandi at Apple town Sopore. The protestors held a massive dharna against the daily blockade of national highway, demanding immediate revocation of restrictions order.

Reports said that scores of members of various civil organisations of Sopore including Traders federation Sopore, Civil society Sopore, Economic Alliance Sopore, Northern Pharmaceutical Distributers Association and Industrial Estate Sopore under the banner of Coordination committee Sopore joined with scores of fruit traders at fruit mandi Sopore and staged a sit peaceful protest.

The protestors demanded revocation of five hour daily restrictions on national highway.

Shouting slogans the protesters demand immediate revocation of order from the Authorities. The protesters holding placards said that such moves prove costly for the fruit Industry in the valley.

President fruit growers and dealers association Sopore Fayaz Ahmad Malik said that due to the restrictions on public transport, the distribution of early varieties of Apples and other fruits and vegetables were badly affected as trucks remain halted on highway for many days which resulting in loses to the Industry.

Javid Ahmad Bhat, President Industrial estate Sopore said that the tyraaders are not against Amarnath yatra or the yatris, but the government should have set up a mechanism in order to ensure free movement of public transport on the highway.
