Hizbul militant killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar: A Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir, police said.
Acting on specific information about the presence of militants in Batpore-Narwani area of Imam Sahib in Shopian district of south Kashmir, security forces launched a cordon and search operation Friday morning, a police official said.
As the forces were conducting searches of the area, the hiding militants fired upon them, he said.
The forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter in which one militant was killed, the official said, adding the body was recovered along with arms and ammunition.
He said the slain militant has been identified as Sameer Seh of Shopian who was affiliated with the proscribed outfit HM.
Seh was involved in several cases related to civilian killings and attacks on security establishments, the spokesman added.
Sameer according to locals had joined militant ranks in May last year when government forces had allegedly damaged property worth lakhs in Sugan village and during the incident property belonging to Sameer’s parents was also allegedly targeted.
“Next day Sameer left home and later through social media we came to know that he had joined Al Badr group,” they said.
Belonging to a very well off family, Sameer was never arrested before joining militant ranks. He is survived by two brothers, sister and parents.
Meanwhile, Sammer was laid to rest after multiple funeral prayers in which thousands of people participated.
Eyewitnesses said that after multiple rounds of funeral prayers, Sameer was laid to rest in presence of thousands of people amid massive pro freedom sloganeering.
Pertinently, Sugan residents buried fourth local militants including an OGW in less than 6 months.
On Jan 12, top militant commander Zeenat ul Islam from Sugan along with his associate was killed in an encounter at Kathpora Yaripora Kulgam.
On Jan 22, Dr Shams ul Haq from Sugan along with his two associates was killed in an encounter in Shirmal area of Shopian district.
On May 31, an OGW Jasim Manzoor from Sugan was killed in an encounter along with two militants in orchards of Dragad area Shopian district.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measures internet services were snapped in most parts of South Kashmir area.
