Sopore fruit traders protest, demand revocation of order

Sopore: Fruit traders at Asia’s second largest fruit mandi at apple town Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday held a protest demonstration against fresh civilian restrictions during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
The traders demanded immediate revocation of the ban order.
Members of the Fruit Growers and Dealers Association led by President Fayaz Ahmad Malik assembled at fruit mandi Sopore while shouting slogans protesters and holding placards and banners which read “revoke highway ban” and “We love Yatris”.
Malik said that people particularly students and business community had been badly affected due to the civilian restrictions on the highway stretch and train services.
Due to the restrictions on public transport, the early varieties of apple and other fruits were also badly affected, he added.
Pertinently, authorities have barred civilian traffic on the 97 km stretch on Kashmir highway for five hours and suspension of trains on Qazigund-Banihal track from 10 am to 3 pm to “facilitate smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra”.
