Srinagar: Former Legislator Nizamuddin Bhat has said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday will set the tone for his Kashmir vision.
In a statement, Bhat said that since his assumption of office, Shah has “maintained discreet silence despite several meetings on Kashmir with security top brass and inputs from Raj Bhavan and his party cadre”.
He said speculations were rife given Shah’s “known postures on Kashmir as BJP president and Prime Minister’s close confidant”.
“However, there is feeling in serious circles that he will spring surprises as is indicated by Governor’s statements on dialogue with Hurriyat. These statements are seen as a prelude to Shah’s actual thinking dictated by larger interests than the party thinking,” Bhat said.
He hoped that Shah will use his national mandate “as strength to shape a Kashmir policy which will be blend of national concerns and the local sentiment”.
Bhat also hoped that Shah will take a call on elections to state assembly so that popular government is in place and issues impending solutions are resolved by representative government.
He said Shah’s visit offers an opportunity to various political parties to put up a joint stand on resolution of all controversial issues through democratic means which would require restoring democratic institutions of prime importance to its legitimate owners.
