Dozens of students miss exams after officials at KU rejected postponement demand

Srinagar: Hundreds of students on Friday missed their B.Ed exams as it clashed with the ongoing National Eligibility Test (NET) exams conducted by NTA. The students missed the B.Ed exams as adamant officials at KU refused to postpone the B.Ed exams of students pursuing the course in various private B.Ed colleges affiliated with the varsity.
The varsity administration refused to postpone the B.Ed exams to avoid the clash with the NET exams scheduled on the same dates by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The NTA has scheduled NET exams from 20 to 28 June which clash with the B.Ed exams scheduled by KU on June 21, 24 and 26, leaving hundreds of students in a dilemma.
“Students were in a catch 22 situation and were not able to decide but they had to sacrifice one of the exams because it was not possible for them to appear in both the exams simultaneously. The students decided to appear in NET exams,” said Arsalan, one of the students. The students said they were preparing for the crucial NET exams and couldn’t afford to lose the opportunity to sit in the exams.
“But we missed B.Ed exams due to non seriousness of the KU administration,” the students alleged.
The students said that NTA had notified dates for NET exams prior to KU’s notification issued for B.Ed exams but the KU still compiled flawed datasheet which clashed with NET exams, leaving students at the receiving end.
“Unfortunately the officials at KU didn’t take into consideration the dates of NET exams but issued date sheet for B.Ed exams according to their own convenience,” the students said.
The students accused the KU administration of playing with their career for their vested interests.
“They (KU) should have deferred the three papers which had clashes with NET exams. But we fail to understand why our exams were not rescheduled,” the students said.
Meanwhile, the students of college of education complained that their 4th semester B.Ed exam has been scheduled by Cluster University Srinagar (CUK) from June 26, which clashes with the dates notified for B.Ed exams.
“The college principal is adamant to complete the course without considering the problems faced by the students,” the students said.
They said the authorities in Cluster University claim that the dates can be modified only if the concerned college principal recommends for it.
“We are in a dilemma what to do now, they don’t understand our problems,” the students said.
An official in KU meanwhile, said there were no chances of postponement of B.ED exams as it will cause inconvenience for the outside state students pursuing B.Ed courses in various private B.Ed colleges operating in the valley.
“Postponement of exam will extend the exam schedule and create difficulties for outside state students putting up at rented accommodations in various districts of the valley,” he said.
He however, said the students who will miss the exams won’t be barred to sit in classes of next semester.
“This year B.Ed course has a provision of ‘carry on’ system in which students with backlog in previous semester are allowed to continue in next semester,” the KU official said.
