Srinagar: The government degree college (GDC) Bagh-i-Dilawar Khan in old city area continues to remain a blot on the face of the government as it has failed to attract the students for admission in under-graduate courses.
The college was established some eight years ago but the enrollment of the college has never gone beyond 20.
However, the department surprisingly has posted around half a dozen permanent faculty members in the college.
Presently, the college is functioning from make shift arrangement in four ‘hired’ rooms of MP higher secondary school (HSS), depicting the grim picture of the poor infrastructural standards in the existing degree colleges of the state. This year the enrollment of the college is less than 10 students.
Earlier, the government had decided to introduce different courses in the college as compared to other nearby institutions to attract students for their admission here but the claims got deflated as the college continues with the old practice.
“In this college, government has posted more faculty than the number of students. From past four years the government claims to make the college attractive and increase the enrollment in the college but the situation is going the other way round,” an official said.
A permanent campus worth Rs 11.45 crore is being constructed for the college which is yet to be completed despite the passage of more than five years since the work was started on the building. The permanent campus is being constructed adjacent to Gandhi Memorial College.
The upcoming building of the College would be separated by just a wall with Gandhi College which is a clear violation of norms for opening the Colleges.
“A college should be at a distance of around 10 kilometers from another college and should have at least five feeding higher secondary schools,” the official said.
However, the college has more than four colleges located within the radius of five kilometers.
“The irony is that GDC Bagh-i-Dilawar Khan has no different courses to offer than its neighboring colleges,” the official added.
Commissioner Secretary higher education department Talat Parvez Ruhella said the issue will be looked into.
“We are already aware about the issue and something out of box has to be done to make this college vibrant,” he said.
