DAK writes to Governor Malik, demands ordinance on incidents involving medicos

Srinagar: In the backdrop of recent thrashing of a doctor in West Bengal, Doctors Association Kashmir has written to Governor Satya Pal Malik demanding ordinance against violence with the doctor community.
In a letter addressed to Malik on Sunday, the DAK said that it had been demanding introduction of the ordinance for last two decades.
It asked the government to act against incidents of violence with the community and “hooliganism, rowdiesm and vandalism in hospitals”.
The DAK said that there had been “more than 50 documented incidents of assaults on doctors reported in Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar/Jammu and in peripheral hospitals functioning under directorate of health services Kashmir and Jammu” last year.
“The mentioned incidents represent only tip of iceberg and a large number of such assaults are not reported or recorded,” the DAK said.
“Keeping in view the frequent assaults on medical fraternity and mass uprising of doctors across the nation it is high time to bring an ordinance and pass a law to ensure safety of a doctor and the hospital infrastructure,” it added.
The DAK said there were at least 19 states that have already enacted the law for protection of doctors.
“Therefore there should be no problem in bringing the law in the larger interests of society which will act as a deterrent to discourage people for doing violence in hospitals”.
The DAK said that it had “exhausted all the ways of democratic means of protests including two hour extra work to press the state government for such ordinance from last ten years”.
“The failure of government to enact such law is unfortunate and is the main reason that today whole medical fraternity across the nation is protesting on roads. We have apprehensions that delaying of such reformative amendments with changing time may derail health care delivery system in country,” the DAK said.
“We request your good self that kindly bring an ordinance in order to safeguard the noble medical profession,” the DAK letter read.
