Srinagar: A Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was Saturday killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.
They said that security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Verinag area of the south Kashmir district following specific information about the presence of militants there, the official said.
An official said that encounter started after a cordon-and-search operation was launched by a joint team of Army’s 19 RR, CRPF and SOG in the area during the wee hours on Saturday.
As forces zeroed towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon forces triggering an encounter, he said.
During exchange of fire one militant was killed however, 2 to 3 militants managed to escape from the spot taking advantage of the dense forests, he added
He identified the slain militant as Mohamed Iqbal Ganaie son of Mohamed Abdullah Ganaie a resident of Nowpora village, which is about 3 kms from Dooru in Anantnag district.
As per locals Iqbal had initially joined militant ranks in year 2002 and then he had gone to Pakistan in 2003 and returned back in 2010 after which he surrendered.
After surrendering he was kept in custody for few months and till April 2018 he was at home, they said.
“It was during the first week of April 2018, he went missing and later we came to know he had joined militant ranks again,” said one of his relatives.
Belonging to a middle class family, Iqbal is survived by three brothers besides his parents, they added.
Meanwhile he was laid to rest after multiple rounds of funeral prayers in his native village.
Eyewitnesses said that thousands of people including women and children participated in his funeral prayers and he was laid to rest amid massive pro freedom and pro Islam slogans.
In wake of the gunfight, internet services were snapped in Anantnag district.
