Prisons Department organises ‘Dawat-e-Iftaar’ at Central Jail Srinagar

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department in collaboration with CAUSE-NGO Saturday organised ‘Dawat-e-Iftaar’ at Central Jail Srinagar.
A mental health and drug de-addiction awareness programme for the jail inmates was also held on the occasion.
Director General of Police & Prisons J&K Dilbag Singh was the chief guest on the occasion. Principal District & Sessions Judge Srinagar Abdul Rashid, DIG Prisons Dr M S Lone, Prof Raes Qadri, Dean Students Welfare University of Kashmir, Dr Showkat Shafi, Deputy Director DIQA, KU, Zubair Rashid, Patron CAUSE, Senior Prison and police officers were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion the DGP said that the purpose of the program was to raise awareness among the inmates and staff about mental illnesses and strategies to attain mental health and wellness. He said that jail authorities are putting in their best efforts to ensure stress-free life inside the prisons and towards this many steps were being taken.
Psychiatric consultations, yoga meditation, art therapy, sports and cultural activities are a regular feature of all the jails, he said.
He added that the jails were by and large tobacco and drug free with programs on drug de-addiction organised in the jails every year.
The DGP said jail authorities were trying to make sure that all arrangements for fasting are in place in the jails so that the inmates don’t face any difficulty during the holy month.
“Changes in diet as suggested by the Prison Medical Officers are also made,” he added.
The DGP wished all the inmates blessings of the holy month of Ramadan.
On the occasion, Mufti Mansoor highlighted the importance of fasting in Ramadan and its reverence in the Islam. Doctors present on the occasion highlighted the health benefits of fasting besides talking about mental illnesses and suicide prevention.
Superintendent Central Jail Mukesh Kakkar appreciated the efforts of CAUSE NGO for reaching out to the jail inmates and also thanked DGP Police and Prisons, and other dignitaries for gracing the occasion.
