Srinagar: Campuses erupted for the 4th consecutive day on Tuesday at various places in Kashmir against the killing of militant commander Zakir Musa in an encounter with government forces last week in south Kashmir’s Tral area.
Two students sustained injuries during clashes with the government forces in Sopore after the latter tried to thwart the students move to take protest march on roads.
In the morning hours on Tuesday, scores of students in Government Degree College (GDC) Sopore staged a protest inside college campus against the killing of militant commander Zakir Musa.
Eyewitnesses said the students staged protests amid pro-freedom slogans inside campus and tried to take out the protest march on road.
“However the JK Police and other paramilitary forces deployed outside college swung into action and thwarted the students move to march on road, triggering clashes in the area,” an eyewitness said.
Following the clashes, the college authorities suspended the class work for the day as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order situation in the campus.
In the clashes, two students identified as Irfan Ahamd and Ishfaq Ahmad was injured with forces who were immediately rushed to local hospital for treatment.
“Irfan Ahamd of Tantraypora Reban was hit by pellets in his eye and was shifted to SMHS Srinagar for specialized treatment,” the doctor at the hospital said.
The second injured student had sustained leg injuries. “We gave him three stitches in his leg and arm. But his condition was stable,” the doctor said.
As the student protests continued, the government seems to be running out of ideas to bring situation under control and convince the students to attend classes peacefully. Barring suspension of class work and closure of educational institutions, the government seems to have no alternative to control the situation in campuses.
Already, the class work was suspended in degree colleges and higher secondary schools of Pulwama district in south Kashmir for fourth consecutive day. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid law and order situation in the district.
In other parts the class work resumed in the educational institutions including schools and colleges after third day of the suspension of class work.
Meanwhile, clashes between government forces and students of Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal erupted over the killing of the militant commander in Tral last week.
Eyewitness said the students were protesting amid massive pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
“The students tried to march out of the campus but the police didn’t allow them to take out the protest march on roads,” the eyewitness said.
In wake of this, the students pelted stones on police and paramilitary forces which was responded by forces by lobbing tear gas shells on them triggering intense clashes.
There were reports about protests and clashes from Islamia College as well. Reports said the clashes erupted between college students and government forces after latter thwarted student move to march on to the roads.
