Care for the needy

The holy month of Ramadhan isnít about to pray five times a day, fast the whole day, and refrain from the consumption of cigarettes and other things only. Itís more than this. It encompasses the concept of helping and encouraging the needy as well. Those that are in need of help seek assistance in this very month. Itís one of the months when we witness them, some amputated, while others with heart-wrenching stories, wandering here and there.
However, a couple of days back, while I was going to offer the ëMagribí prayers, I came to witness a young lady along with two little children going to and fro outside the Masjid. Upon observing them, they pocketed out a piece of cloth with some documents hanging on a short thread and leaned against the wall.
A few minutes later, surfacing these things onto the floor, they begin to seek alms so pathetically that a worst-of-our kind wouldnít turn eyes off them and at least would give some pennies, but that wasnít the caseóthe same-fasting-and high-class people didnít pay any heed, even those that paid were abusing and throwing execrable appellations at them. I was so broken inside while seeing one of our fasting-men clamouring and creating hullabaloo that, ìDonít make fool of us to be here with gloomy faces.î Oh! God Almighty how would I ever be able to forget her pale face and uncanny gesture. ëSo painful to bear; so egregious of usí.
Anyways, my conscience didnít let me walk away, and I checked the documents, where it was written that these two children are suffering from blood cancer. The disease which trembles our legs very often.
She talked her heart out and divulged, the pains hidden inside her, to me that sheís been divorced leaving her along with these little toddlers on the roads for eternity too. She cried incessantly. Her whole body was quivering of futuristic thoughts. Her psychological centre seemed damaged. But, was anyone listening to her. Everyone was indulged in doing his/her mean business. Not a single being. None whatsoever.
Apart from it, there are other people with different stories that are in need of help. But, what, we are always used tolampooning, deriding and even treating them as done to a ëpickpocketí.
The messenger of Allah has forbidden us to treat a destitute as thatóbut this seems to have no value before these pure people always seen boastful of their lives. Whatís the worth of fasting the whole month while ignoring the needy peopleí that desire for daily bread and butter!
Tailpiece: ëThe peopleí all over the globe are supposed to help each other in this holy and soul-refreshing month in particular, and the rest of months in general; and when it comes to a destitute, itís onus on us to uplift and assist them through all ways possible. Itís our dutyto not let the needy onto their fate, rather we should alter their ruined-fate into good.Thatís what defines a true human being. Whatís better than making else one happy is the question we need to contemplate on.
