Govt survey shows education department’s failure to reach out to people

Srinagar: Highlighting the government’s failure to bring reforms in the education sector, a recent survey done by the department has revealed that the government-run schools cater to only 18 percent of the areas in Srinagar district despite having a huge flock of teachers appointed in the schools running in the district.
The survey was carried out by the Srinagar district administration in consultation with the concerned education department while framing a policy for establishment of model schools in Srinagar district.
In the survey it was revealed that the private schools cater to 82 percent of the district despite having less number of schools and teachers working in the sector.
“According to the survey, the teacher pupil ratio in government schools up to class 10th is 1:5 against recommended 1:30. While as the ratio in private schools is 1:20,” an official said.
As per the official figures, there are over 500 government schools in Srinagar district in which around 20000 students are enrolled in different classes.
“The number of teachers is above 4000. Which is more than what is required given the number of students in the schools,” an official said.
As per the figures, there are around 550 private schools in Srinagar wherein 1.75 students are enrolled up to class 10th. The number of teachers is around 7000 to 8000.
“This simply indicates that government schools have no takers in Srinagar district despite having a huge manpower kept available by the department,” an official said.
Pertinently, the district administration has decided to set up model schools on the analogy of government schools in New Delhi. To begin with, 25 schools will be set up as smart schools in City.
For this the district administration Srinagar has conducted a survey to make a detailed proposal for refurbishing of the schools up to middle level.
“Have conducted a detailed survey of city schools to get the first-hand account and gather information about the student needs,” deputy commissioner Srinagar, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary wrote on his twitter handle.
While the process is in its initial stage, all eyes are on the district administration for its plans to convert existing government schools into smart schools.
