Srinagar: The Kashmir University (KU) administration is mulling to slash the admission fee for B.Sc nursing course. In this regard the varsity administration has also written to the state government to provide additional funding to run B.Sc nursing college in Anantnag.
Earlier, there was a massive outcry over the fee structure set by KU for B.Sc nursing courses. The students also held protest against KU administration for charging exorbitant admission fee for the course which they said was more than what is being charged by private nursing colleges.
The students are pursuing their B.Sc nursing course from the Nursing and Paramedical Institute setup in KU’s south campus. The college was inaugurated in 2018 by the then vice chancellor of the varsity.
Following the student protest, the varsity had also constituted a committee to consider the demand of students for slashing the admission fee for the course.
“The committee is working on it and we are expecting a positive development on it. The committee will submit the report to the administrative department and final decision will be taken accordingly,” a KU official said.
The nursing college is a constituent College owned by Kashmir University but the administration is generating revenue for the institutions out of the fee charged from students. Till date the varsity has failed to plead its case before state government to get funding for this college.
The present fee structure of the college is Rs 77000 which according to students is higher than other courses offered by the university. The B.Sc nursing course was started in KU’s nursing college during 2017.
While KU is charging Rs 77000 for the course, students said the fee charged by SKIMS and GMC is only Rs 10000 and Rs 40000 for the same course.
The intake capacity per year for the four year course is 50 students which means that the varsity is generating a revenue of Rs 38.5 lakhs out of the fee charged from the students in a year.
“We have already registered our complaint in J&K governor’s grievance cell. We are hopeful that the fee gets slashed for the course,” said a student.
An official in KU said they have proposed to the government for release of funds for the college which will pave way for slashing fee structure for the students.
Registrar KU, Nisar Ahmad Mir said the matter is being looked into.
