Bandipora rape case: High Court asks IGP to file status report by Friday

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Wednesday took suo moto cognizance of the Bandipora rape case of a three-year-old girl and directed Inspector General of Police (Kashmir zone) to file a status report by Friday.
A division bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Tashi Rabstan, taking notice of reports about the rape case, directed the IGP to file a status report about the investigations before 10 am on Friday.
A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped last week by her neighbour, leading to widespread outrage and protests against the incident.
The accused has been arrested by police and a special investigation team constituted for a speedy investigation of the incident.
Meanwhile, protests against the incident continued for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, with protestors demanding speedy trial in the case and exemplary punishment for the accused.
Scores of people assembled at Ganta Ghar (Clock Tower) here at the commercial hub Lal chowk and sought justice for the victim.
The protestors holding banners and placards reading slogans against the rapists, said that such actions are creating fear among the girls in the society.
“We demand exemplary punishment for the culprit so that no one could dare to do such a heinous crime in future,” the protesters said.
Notably, various educational institutions across the Valley remained closed today as a precautionary measure.
The class work at various colleges and higher secondary schools in Srinagar, Bandipora, Anantnag, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Budgam and other districts was suspended following the protests against Bandipora incident.
On Tuesday, the students of different educational institutions demanded justice, stating that the involved person should be hanged till death. Some of the protests also turned violent on Tuesday during which clashes erupted between students and forces.
Moreover, the Shia-Sunni coordination committee has also appealed to the people to maintain calm and end protests to give police a chance to probe the incident fairly.
