Students stage protests, demand justice

Srinagar: Students protests erupted in various parts of the valley on Monday against the rape of a minor girl in Sumbal area of Bandipora district last week. The protesting students demanded stern punishment for the accused who has been already arrested by the police.
Reports said that the students and the faculty members of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora in south Kashmir assembled in the campus and staged a peaceful protest against the incident.
The deans of various faculties besides teaching and non-teaching staff members and the students participated in the peaceful protest. The protesting students and faculty members demanded stern action against the accused.
Notably, there has been an outrage over horrific rape of a minor in Trigam, Sumbal of Bandipora district.
Already, Police has arrested a school principal who has allegedly produced a fake certificate of the rape accused, declaring him a minor. However, a top police official said the school certificate won’t be considered to determine the age of the rape accused.
“The rape accused is not a regular student and is working as a labourer or a mason in the nearby areas,” a top official said.
Massive protests erupted in various parts of Valley with the people demanding speedy trial of the case.
The students of Kashmir University (KU) also held a protest inside the varsity campus against the rape of a minor girl. Scores of students from various departments assembled inside the campus and staged a protest.
The protesting students were demanding stern punishment against the accused. They also demanded action against the school principal who had allegedly issued a certificate declaring the accused a minor.
Scores of students in Sopore staged protests against the Sumbal incident. The students of higher secondary school Sopore and other schools participated in the peaceful protest in Sopore.
Meanwhile, students of Central University of Kashmir (CUK) and Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal also registered their peaceful protests against rape of minor girl in Sumbal.
Students of Women’s Degree College Baramulla and Degree College Uri also staged their protest against the rape of the minor in Bandipora.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan while addressing media persons in Srinagar appealed people to maintain peace and assured a fast track probe to ensure justice to Bandipora rape victim.
“We have instructions from the Governor to hold a time-bound probe into the case. I am personally monitoring the developments of the investigations of the case,” he said.
