Srinagar: The Stray dogs are creating nuisance at Housing Colony Chanapora during the month of holy Ramadan as civic bodies have failed to take stern action to curb this menace, allege the inhabitants.
“Piles of garbage have become favorite spots for stray dogs seen roaming around parks, houses, primary health center, and local mosques. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has failed to listen to the complaints,” rued the locals.
Altaf Shawl, a locale said that there are dozens of stray dogs in this area. “The garbage dump is the main reason why there is a huge number of stray dogs. For some, it has become impossible to roam around fearing these dogs might bite them,” he said.
“They chase you and make you run. The garbage piling near the PHC offers a variety of feasts to street dogs. Because they feed lavishly on the waste, it is dangerous to go near to it,” he said, blaming the SMC of no action.
Mehraj-Ud-Din another resident said that people from Chanapora and adjacent areas come here and drop the litter as there is no other place for dumping the waste. “They (SMC) take a hell of a time to remove waste from the area. SMC workers are kind of lazy they work according to their own will,” he said.
He further said that “there is no dustbin here, where one could drop litter. They may have taken dustbins to their home. Believe me; it has become difficult for residents living up here to move out of their houses. We now offer prayers at home as in the darkness stray dogs become quite dangerous”.
Amir Amin said that matter need to be solved as early as possible as it has created fear psychosis among the locals as parents do not let their children to go out of their home fearing they will be bitten by the stray dogs.
“SMC just make tall claims that they are working in sterilizing the dogs but nothing much has been done on the ground,” he said.
Deputy Mayor, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Sheikh Mohammed Imran said that they will look into the matter and “issue will be resolved very soon”.
