SKIMS says relatives’ allegations is ‘baseless’

Srinagar: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has reiterated as “baseless” the claims by relatives of a Srinagar woman, who they alleged died due to medical negligence.
Mir Anjum, a resident of Srinagar’s Bemina and who was in her 20s, expired at SKIMS last month after she was transfused with 2 pints of blood. Her relatives allege that Anjum was transfused “mismatched blood”.
Almost a month after refuting the allegations by the family early on, the SKIMS reiterated on Thursday that the committee set up over the allegations had “found no evidence of mismatched transfusion reaction in the patient”.
The new statement by SKIMS comes in the wake of a fresh protest by the deceased woman’s relatives.
“The committee scrutinized patient record as well as blood bank record for any mismatched or transfusion reaction… The allegations leveled by the relatives are baseless,” the statement said.
It stated that Anjum was a case of “EHPVO with portal cavernoma with esophageal varices, post splenectomy with devascularization”.
Two blood pints were transfused, one on 29th March and another on 30th March, added the statement.
The statement said that sample of the transfused blood as well as the blood bag were tested.
“No haemolysis was found in patient post transfusion,” it added.
