Police arrest ‘notorious’ drug peddler from Srinagar

Srinagar: Police said Tuesday it arrested a “notorious drug peddler” from Downtown Srinagar.
Identified as Ghulam Nabi Sheikh alias Nabbe Kalla son of Habib-ul-Lah Sheikh , a resident of Tujgari Mohalla Shiekh Colony, the accused has been taken into detention under law and has been shifted to Central Jail Kupwara.
Police investigation has revealed that the accused is involved in “selling drugs including Charas and Ganja among the youth in Central Kashmir particularly in downtown”.
A police statement said that “several cases under NDPS Act are registered against him in various Police Stations across valley”.
‘Assailant’ from Maisuma charged with ‘attempt to murder’
Srinagar: Police on Tuesday arrested an “assailant” who it said had attacked and injured an ice-cream vendor near Ghanta Ghar.
A statement by Police Station Maisuma said that it received a “distress call” on Monday that one ice cream vendor near Ghanta Ghar was attacked by “an unknown assailant with a sharp edged weapon” and was bleeding on the spot.
“Responding swiftly, a Quick Response Team from Police Station Maisuma reached the spot and shifted the injured person- identified as Asif Ahmad Mir resident of Kupwara-to the hospital,” the statement said.
An FIR under relevant sections of law was registered and investigation was initiated in the matter.
“During the course of investigation, the accused was identified as Burhan Ahmad Wani, son of Khazir Mohammad Wani, a resident of Maisuma, at present in Maloora HMT”.
Wani, Police said, “had fled away from the spot after committing the crime”.
It said that the accused was tracked by police and was taken into custody.
“When the officers spoke to him about the incident, they learnt of his involvement in the crime and subsequently a weapon of offence was also recovered,” the police statement added.
Wani has been charged for “attempt to murder” and remains in custody.
