Sumbal: ‘Ehsaas International’, in association with Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Government Medical College, Srinagar kick started the first leg of a programme on ‘Women Menstrual Health and Hygiene’ at Zalpora village in Sumbal.
Tuesday’s event will be followed by more such camps in other areas.
The programme named as ‘PANEIN FIKIR – let’s care about ourselves’ is an awareness initiative highlighting use and proper disposal of sanitary pads among female masses of society, as per Hakim Mohammad Ilyas, General Secretary, Ehsaas.
A statement said that there was still a large population of females in the valley, who are not aware of the use of sanitary pads.
However, many are reluctant to use it due to a number of reasons even though they are aware about it, it read.
“At the same time it is found that a good number of females do not have financial means to buy and use sanitary pads, which puts a direct risk on their health,” said Dr Auqfeen Nisar, in-charge of the programme. She is pursuing MD in Community Medicine at GMC, Srinagar.
Chairman of Ehsaas, Syed Tabasum Geelani said that under the initiative they wanted to provide awareness on the use of sanitary pads and its proper disposal.
“We would provide sanitary pads free of cost in areas where the concept of its use is new to people. Subsequently pads will be made available at subsidized rates to encourage females to use it. Also social taboos attached to this concern of females will be addressed taking the help from religious preachers,” she added.
A consultation session by Dr Syed Masooma Rizvi, a leading gynaecologist of the valley was also held on the sidelines of the camp.
