Sopore: Heavy rains followed by hailstorm on Thursday evening wreaked havoc on fruit orchards and vegetable gardens in many villages of Zaingeer including apple town Sopore, Rafiabad, Sangrama and other parts of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Locals said that strong hail storm, which continued for around 15 minutes, caused huge damage to standing vegetables as well in many north Kashmir areas leaving farmers in distress over expected losses.
Many orchardists from the area told ‘Kashmir Vision’ that the brief hailstorm caused damage to crops like apple, vegetables and other fruits.
“We were expecting a good crop this year as our orchards seemed to be abundant in apples, but the hailstorm has not only dashed our hopes, but also left us in desperation,” said Manzoor Ahmad Dar, a farmer from Zaingeer area.
Local farmers appealed the authorities to compensate the loss.
