Unconventional courses becoming popular among students

The competitive scenario these days amongst students is to excel and to pursue unconventional careers. One question that haunts every student after class 10th and 12th is “which stream to choose as a career option?” “What career I want to get into?” Class 11th becomes a threshold for the students to decide their streams. Right stream selection is very necessary for a rewarding career. The society also asks you a question “what will you do after class 12th?”
This question is a unified one in the entire world, irrespective of the stream you are either from Science, Commerce or Humanities. Students are overburdened with the career choices, contemplating on a million dollar question of deciding their destiny and the incessant enthusiasm for making into a good college.
Conventionally, the options that a science student with Maths can choose is Engineering, clear JEE, Non-Math students are expected to clear NEET, AIIMS; CA/CS/ICWA or B.com (Hons) from a top college in Delhi University are the options for a Commerce student.
Humanities students also are on the radar to pick up an option which gives them a foundation for a rock-solid career ahead. Many generations have been and are part of this vicious circle from ages. What is ironical in this case is that people still follow this conventional path. But as they say, the only thing constant is change; things are changing slowly and gradually. Times are changing and many students are opting for unconventional courses. Among many, two courses which are high in demand and most opted are Hotel Management and Mass Communication.
Guidance from teachers and friends plays a very important role to guide students and motivate them to be better in whatever they do and also helped them in proper research about every career available for them.
Let’s brief and get the inside picture of the two courses which are on the top of the list –
Hotel Management
There are many career options that one can choose after 12th. Mostly the choice is governed by the interest of the student, and future scope. Hotel Management is one of the highly job-oriented fields. With globalization, many hotel chains are expanding to different territories of the world. Many economies of the world are only based on hospitality and tourism. These two are the major contributors to the GDP of a country. This has created a huge demand for Hotel Management professionals. Hotel Management covers a wide range of services including food service, accommodation, and catering.
The scope of this course is immense. It is not restricted to the domestic boundaries of a country but it extends to the various part of the world. The game scenario has changed manifolds, and hospitality sector offers exciting opportunities to graduates who wish to travel, and take up careers both nationally and internationally. It is a very demanding job. One can achieve a long term career in this sector. There were days when Hotel Management as a career option was looked down upon by many, but this is now an egalitarian thought.
Hotel Management in India is a three-year course. The courses that are available in India are Bachelor of Hotel Management, Bachelors of Arts in Hotel Management and Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management to name a few. The apex institution in India is the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT). The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is conducted for admission to the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM). The specializations offered under Hotel Management are as follows:
a) House Keeping
b) Food Production
c) Front Office
d) Food & Beverages
This year the exam will be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), which will be an Aptitude Test, which tests you on English, Reasoning & Logical Deductions, Numerical Ability & Analytical Aptitude, General Knowledge and Aptitude for the service sector.
Some of the other best colleges to pursue Hotel Management are-Oberoi Centre for Learning & Development- STEP, Christ University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Taj-IHM, Aurangabad, Welcome group, Manipal and Dice School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts.
Mass Communication
The world has seen a constant change and unprecedented explosion in communication technology and media. The growth is phenomenal. The result of globalization is that all boundaries have been transcended, and the entire world community seems to have been brought together into one. It is here that mass communication, as a stream of study and as a career has become so important and a loved course. Mass Communication is not limited to journalism. The horizon has increased by leaps and bounds. A career in Mass Communication is not only high paying but also bring in a great deal of job satisfaction and expression of creativity.
Mass Communication is a stream neutral option. Not long ago, people with good communication skills were considered fit for journalism and other areas of Mass Communication. The scenario has changed 360 degrees. Mass Communication gives you the ability to make serious changes in the society as well as become the harbinger and voice for many without voices. Like any career option, Mass Communication to has positive features, as well as a flip side career in Mass Communication, requires commitment, dedication, and sacrifice, but as they say, you also get the rewards of your hard work, so Mass Communication is one such career.
Like any other course, admission to a Mass Communication course at a college in Delhi University is based on an entrance exam. The Two programs BA (H) Journalism and BMMC are the most sought after courses of Delhi University. The subject matter of the exam is-verbal ability, media aptitude, current affairs and general awareness.
The other best colleges for Mass Communication are Symbiosis Centre for Media and Communication, St. Xavier’s Mumbai, Christ University, Bengaluru, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, and Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi. Mass Communication and Journalism Graduates work in a variety of fields in traditional news media and publishing, advertising, public relations, and research institutes.
