Srinagar: Employees from Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CAPD) Tuesday staged a protest against the government proposal to strip the department off from some of its responsibilities.
The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs previously known as ‘Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department’ is one of the oldest Department in the State entrusted with the responsibility Public Distribution System, regulation of supplies, LPG and other Petroleum Products etc, Price/Market Control, redressal of Consumer Grievances and Protection of Consumer Rights and Consumer Awareness Programme.
The protesting employees led by the Association president, Ajaz Khan said that government is mulling to take away some of the functions from them and those will be handed over to Legal Metrology Department.
“We won’t let it happen. We will hit to roads if government implements such a proposal that will virtually leave the department redundant,” he said.
Khan said that government is intending to limit the role of the CAPD Department and it will be kept limited to Public Distribution System only.
“Rest of the functions that our department performs will be handed over to Legal Metrology Department. This is unacceptable and we demand the implementation of all those decisions taken in a meeting on March 7. We warn government of dire consequences in case they implement the proposal,” he said.
