KU Inks MoU with ARM

SRINAGAR: Towards further strengthening its Industry-Academia Collaborations University of Kashmir today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ARM, a multinational IP company under its ARM University Program.
The MOU was signed by Prof. Akbar Masood, Dean Academic Affairs on behalf of the University of Kashmir in the presence of Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Zaffar Ahmad Reshi, Dean Research, Prof. F. A. Masoodi, Dean School of Applied Sciences and Technology, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, Registrar, Dr. M. Tariq Banday, Head Department of Electronics and Inst. Technology and other teaching and technical staff of the Department of Electronics and Inst. Technology.
Congratulating the Department for the current MoU, Prof. Talat Ahmad Vice-Chancellor advised the faculty and technical staff members of the Department to utilise the services and benefits provided by ARM through this MOU. This MoU said Prof. Talat will empower our students with necessary skills through study and hands-on training in the use of ARM Tools and help them in getting placement in the fast-growing industries including Embedded Systems.
ARM Holdings with its worldwide network of officesis a leading licensor of the processor IP designs to silicon vendors. With over 14,000 cumulative signed licenses, 17 billion ARM-based chips, 4500 patents, ARM has been dominating the market of processor IPs (CPU, Multimedia, Physical IPs, System IPs, and Security). Today, ARM-based application processors can be found in about 85% of the world’s mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.
Dr. M. Tariq Banday, Head Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology, University of Kashmir in his welcome address informed the audience that the Department, since its inception in 1985 has been active in introduction of new programs and courses, conduct of research on contemporary topics, providing students and scholars with high-end contemporary tools and broad set of skills.
He said that the Department has been executing national schemes and projects of national importance, improving collaborations with institutions of national and international importance. He informed that the current MoU shall substantially support newly introduced M. Tech. programme in Embedded Systems and Solution in the Department. Dr. Banday expressed that benefits of the collaboration will soon be extended to other University Departments, constituent and affiliated colleges offering programs in diverse domains of Electrical Sciences.
Ms. AporvaVerma, Regional Manager, University Program, South Asia, ARM praised University for its contribution and commitment towards academic and research excellence. Spelling out the benefits under ARM University Program, Ms.Aporvasaid that it serves higher education with academically rigorous Education Kits and tools that use technologies from the Arm ecosystem in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science including Free Licensing of Keil MDK and DS for multiple concurrent users. The commercial value of these licenses, addedMs.Aporva, is approximately US $50,000.00 for each Institute.
Prof. Akbar MasoodDean Academic Affairs while signing the MoU congratulated Dr. Banday for this collaboration and overall academic growth of the Department. Prof. Zafar A. Reshi Dean Research spoke on the significance of this MoU for the University in general and the benefits it will fetch to the Department in particular. Prof. Farooq A. Masoodi Dean School of Applied Sciences and Technologyexpressed hope that this collaboration will yield desired results and be strengthened in future. Dr. Nisar A. Mir, Registrar in his address, extended full support and cooperation to the Department and ARM in the execution of current MoU.
