Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Nowgam area of the summer capital Srinagar on Friday morning, police said.
Security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Nowgam area following information about presence of militants there, a police official said.
He said the two militants were killed in the ensuing encounter.
A police spokesman said that based on credible inputs about the presence of the militants in SutsooKalan area of Nowgam in the outskirts of District Srinagar, a cordon and search operation was launched by police and security forces in the area.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the hiding militants which was retaliated leading to an encounter, police said.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
“From the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter, it is understood that both the killed militants are Pakistani Nationals identified as Ali and Idrees,” the spokesman said.
As per the police records, both were affiliated with proscribed outfit JeM and were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attack on security establishments and civilians.
“They were involved in conspiring and executing many attacks in the area. Several crime cases were registered against both the slain militants,” police added.
“Arms and ammunition including rifles were recovered from the site of encounter. All the incriminating materials including rifles and ammunition have been taken in the case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other cases. Police has registered a case in this regard,” the spokesman added.
The spokesman once again requested people not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.
“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off all the explosives materials if any,” the spokesman added.
