Less than 50 per cent cases being registered within stipulated timeframe of 21 days

Srinagar: The state of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a single digit increase in case of registration of births over more than a decade, with less than 50 per cent of cases being reported and registered within the stipulated timeframe of 21 days.

As per data presented in ‘Vital Statistics of India Based on the Civil Registration System,’ collected by the Registrar General, India—Ministry of Home Affairs, there has been an increase of 8.5 per cent in case of registration of births in J&K with lowest being in 2007 and the highest, after the increase, being in 2018.

The data reveals that the level of registration of births in J&K was the lowest at 66 per cent in the year 2007 and 77.6 in the year 2018, pointing at the increase of 8.5 over the period of more than a decade.

While the state has recorded 77.6 percent as the level of registration of births, the situation is quite different in the neighboring states. Haryana records the level as almost 100 per cent, with the initial percentage being 91. Punjab on the other side has an initial as well as the latest rate as 100 per cent.

Another parameter that the data has taken into the consideration is the level of reporting births and deaths. Under this, the rural population has taken a lead in reporting the cases as compared to that of urban areas.

With the overall percentage of level of reporting in the state being 53.8 per cent, the rural population has taken a lead by recording 55.8 percent when it comes to the level of reporting. At the same time, the urban areas of the state record the level as 47.7 percent, the data reveals.

Pertinently, as per the data, the rural areas are having more registration centres as compared to that of urban areas. There are 261 such centres in the rural areas, whereas, there are 87 in urban, with total number such centres being 348 in the entire state.

Moreover, while featuring among the states like those of Uttrakhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, JK has recorded the percentage of less than 50 per cent when it comes to the registering a birth within 21 days, says the data.

The data reveals that the state records 40.1 per cent of births that have been registered within 21 days. As per the data, during the latest year, a total number of 151935 births have been recorded, out of which only 60889 births were registered within 21 days.

In terms of deaths, the state also features among the lowly performing states, with the percentage being less than 50 per cent. There also, the state features among lowly performing states, with the percentage taking a dip to settle down at 30.6 per cent.

The data reveals that the state records 30.6 per cent of deaths that have been registered within 21 days. As per the data, during the latest year, a total number of 36431 deaths have been recorded, out of which only 11160 deaths were registered within 21 days.
