Students bear brunt of Baramulla encounter, schools closed for 10 days

Srinagar: The students enrolled in the government schools in Bandi Village of Baramulla district had to bear the brunt of the encounter between militants and government forces that left two militants dead.
A day after encounter was over, the district administration in Baramulla have ordered for closure of all educational institutions located in Bandi village of Chandoosa area of Baramulla town.
A letter was sent to the office of Chief Education Officer (CEO) by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla with directions to close the schools for around 10 days.
“The SSP Baramulla has advised to close the schools for at least 10 days at BandiPayeen to sanitize the whole area in view of the recent encounter and possibility of explosives,” read the letter issued by DC Baramulla.
The CEO Baramulla was asked to implement the direction with intimation to the district administration.
A senior police official said they have suggested the closure of schools keeping in view the apprehensions of explosives and other material that must have been left behind at the encounter site.
“Our team defused six grenades while clearing the debris at the encounter site. So it was necessary to close the schools in the village to avoid any causality,” the police official said.
The official said their bomb defusing (BD) squad has been stationed at the nearby police post in Chandoosa village.
According to officials, there are around five schools in the village which include a government higher secondary school (HSS) BandiPayeen and four government middle schools.
It is not been for the first time when the academics has been hit in Kashmir due to encounter or killing of civilian. From the past three years, the education has been caught between the devil and deep sea due to law and order situation in the strife torn Kashmir.
Meanwhile, an official in the education department said the department has made alternate arrangements for the students to avoid their academic losses.
“A letter has been sent by CEO Baramulla to adjust the students of these schools in adjacent schools in the village,” an official said.
