Srinagar: Signifying the poor state of affairs in the school education department, a Middle School in Srinagar outskirts is functioning from a shabby two room structure.
The department has left the school unattended despite having enrolment of more than 200 students in the school.
Government Girls Middle School (GMS) at Boatman Colony in Bemina area is located barely a kilometer away from the Chief Education Officer’s (CEO) office but the school is still functioning in pathetic condition from a rented accommodation hired from local Auqaf committee.
The school is functional in one office cum kitchen and has only two shabby class rooms.
These schools exist at a time when the state administration is claiming of bringing reforms in terms of infrastructure in the government run educational institutions.
In this school the teachers adjust students of four classes in two classrooms. The school lacks playground, proper drinking water and toilet facility.
A teacher posted in the school said the department has ignored the school over the years and students have become the worst victim of the official apathy.
“The accommodation provided to us has no facets to be called as an educational institution. Four classes are adjusted in a room,” the teacher said, adding that one classroom is adjusted within a Masjid.
“It is total chaos here. This is the ground situation of our department,” the teacher said.
While the officials at the helm of affairs claim non availability of land for construction of school buildings, the boatman colony school has acquired land on their own but awaits the construction of the school building.
An official in education department said the construction of the new building was decided and will be completed on war footing basis. He however, admitted that the land acquired for construction of building was fenced. “The construction was delayed as it was not included in the financial year plan,” an official said.
Director school Education Kashmir (DSEK) Muhammad Younis Malik said the matter will be looked into.
“I will ask the CEO to submit a report in this regard. Progress of construction will also be examined,” he said.
