Free medical camp for school children at Bemina

Srinagar: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Saturday held a day-long free medical camp at Yateem Khana School in Bemina area of Srinagar city.
DAK President, Dr. Nisar-ul-Hassan in a statement issued here said school health programme is an important component of total health care delivery system to promote, protect and maintain health of school children.
“Around 300 children were screened by a team of specialist doctors headed by DAK Spokesperson Dr Riyaz Ahmad Daga. The team screened children for diseases, deficiencies; defects and disabilities besides checked their nutritional and immunization status,” he said.
DAK President said students were dewormed on spot as part of comprehensive school health programme which was launched by DAK in July 2015.
He said majority of students had infectious diseases because of poor hygiene and sanitation.
The team made students aware about the importance of personal hygiene, environmental sanitation and safe drinking water.
Students were sensitized and made aware of H1N1 influenza and were educated about measures to be taken to protect individuals and community from flu.
Free medicines were given to patients and baseline investigations were done on all the students.
Dr Nisar said in view of poverty and prevailing socio-cultural milieu, substantial number of school children suffer from malnutrition, infectious diseases, intestinal parasites, dental caries and diseases of skin, eye and ear.
“It is our duty to prevent school children from the menace of drug abuse which has jeopardized their health and well being,” he said.
“Today school children live and grow in a stressful environment that push children into psychological problems and timely identification and correction through proper counseling is the key to avert their psychosocial problems,” he added.
Other doctors who attended on patients in the camp were Dr Suhail Shah (Dentist), Dr Waseem (pediatrician), Dr Zahoor (Physician specialist) and Dr Shahid Peerzada (Internist).
