APPI sponsored VMS project e-launched in four districts

Srinagar: Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone, Secretary to Government, Social Welfare Department Thursday e-launched Rs1.29 crore Project ‘Early identification and intervention for children with disabilities’ in the age group of 0-18 years, aimed at their rehabilitation in the four districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, Leh & Kargil.
The rehabilitation project has been sponsored by ‘Azimpremji Philanthropic’ initiative or APPI to be implemented by Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS).
Aim of the project is early identification and intervention of persons with disabilities of the four districts and to provide complete rehabilitation to the identified beneficiaries on CBR basis as well as on institution basis as per the need of individual beneficiary.
The VMS will provide therapeutic and educational inputs to the children with special needs and then plan the strategies for their mainstreaming. The target group and their families will be provided psycho-socio counseling. The children requiring of medical and surgical intervention as per need will be referred to tertiary care hospitals.
Dr Lone, who e-launches the project simultaneously in the four districts via Skype. Speaking on the occasion, said, they are committed to extend all possible help the implementing agency through the field institutions of Social Welfare Department in the four districts.
Earlier, noted ENT specialist, Dr Mir Mohammad Maqbool, founding President of VMS, in his inaugural address said that there is urgent need for increasing the outreach of VMS so that all the disabled persons, special children, spinal injury victims, amputees etc are benefited by providing them aids and appliances as per requirement their beneficiaries and mainstreaming of rehabilitated beneficiaries.
Dr Mushtaq Margoob, leading psychiatrist, Director, SWAB center of VMS, speaking on the occasion said that nearly 20% children and almost all disabled persons face psychological challenges.
Dr Abdul Qayum, President, Anjumani Moin- ul -Islam, Leh participating partner of the project said that his organisation has been doing social work since last over one century and how his organisation worked with VMS to increase its outreach and help the disabled.
He also said that his organisation has also signed an MOU with GK Medical Trust for setting up a modern diagnostic Lab in Let to provide better diagnostic facilities for better healthcare. He also talked about how his organisation was working for harmony among different people and promoting better inter faith understanding.
On this occasion message from Dr Villayat Ali Vice President, Baqiriya Healthcare and Research organisations, Kargil was also presented in which he welcomed the VMS’s efforts in launching the APPI project for District Kargil.
Priya Vardarajan of APPI in her video message reaffirmed her organisation’s commitment to make the project a success. She lauded VMS for its missionary mode of working.
Mudasir Ashraf, Coordinator, for the project gave a detailed presentation about the project and hoped that every participating organisation and individual associated with it will spare no effort to make it a big success.
Dr Bashir Lone, Administrator, VMS presented a vote of thanks. A large number of civil society members and stakeholders were present on the occasion.
